LEONOR (aka MISTRESS OF THE DEVIL) is a dramatic film directed in 1975 by Juan Bunuel and starring Liv Ullmann, Michel Piccoli, Ornella Muti, Antonio Ferrandis, Jose Maria Caffarel, Angel del Pozo, Carmen Maura, Piero Vida, Jose Maria Prada. Leonor (Ullmann), the wife of the medieval lord Richard (Piccoli), dies from a horse fall, and she is buried by her husband with his own hands, but he cannot forget her. Even his marriage to Catherine (Muti), a very young, beautiful and sweet girl manages to lift him from his state of prostration, and so Richard asks for Satan to give him back Leonor, who one evening, during his solitary wanderings, he glimpsed in the bush. Richard loves the two sons he had from Leonor, as indeed he loves his second wife, yet cannot find peace. Ten years after the tragedy, with the help of Satan, finally gets the awakening of Leonor and he brings her back to the castle. But now the awakened bride is a kind of vampire who feeds herself with the blood of many children including that of his own. Eventually Richard, abandoned even by his own subjects, not resisting the guilt for the death of his children and for having personally killed Catherine, goes to throw himself from the Devil's Bridge, carrying with him Leonor. For this ancient tale of love and death, Ennio Morricone composed a soundtrack that evokes and underlines the supernatural aspect of the story, capturing all the colors and shades of the medieval era. For the leading actress, the composer wrote a love theme of mystical flavor for horns, orchestra and choir, alternated with dissonant passages describing the covenant between the male leading actor and Satan, with the brutal horror generated by the wicked pact. Maestro Morricone himself approved the content of this CD (TT 39:52), featuring all of the music stored in the stereo master tapes of the original recording session.
