THE MALTESE FALCON, 1941. Hard-drinking private eye Sam Spade sleuths the backyard of San Francisco in search of an elusive black bird statuette while evading the setups of three disparate miscreants: the duplicitous Brigid, the perfumed Mr. Cairo, and the scheming Fat Man. Huston's brilliant directorial debut is aided by first-rate performances, excellent camera work, as well as the director's acute attention to detail while shooting the film. Based on the crime novel by Dashiell Hammett.

GEORGE WASHINGTON SLEPT HERE, 1942. A Jack Benny farce about a confirmed Manhattanite whose antique-crazed wife buys a rotting colonial house, and wants him to live in it. Academy Award Nominations: Best (Black-and-White) Interior Decoration.

MASK OF DIMITRIOS, 1944. A mystery writer named Leyden is intrigued by the tale of notorious criminal Dimitrios Makropolous, whose body was found washed up on the shore in Istanbul. He decides to follow the career of Dimitrios around Europe, to learn more about the man. Along the way, he is joined by mysterious Mr. Peters, who has his own motivation. Stars Zachary Scott, Sydney Greenstreet, and Peter Lorre.

HIGH SIERRA, 1941. A seminal gangster film that focused attention on Bogart and writer Huston. Bogart plays a violent criminal just released from prison who knows he's got just one more job in him. An aging gang boss wants Bogart to lead a jewel heist at a resort. When he sees the inexperienced men he'll be leading (and fends off the attentions of Lupino, the girlfriend of one of the thugs), Bogart suspects there will be trouble and there is when a cop is killed during the robbery. A manhunt drives Bogart to the highest peak in the High Sierras where he awaits death at the hands of the police. A gripping portrait of a desperate outlaw and a breakthrough for its creators.

NORTHERN PURSUIT, 1943. Errol Flynn stars as Steve Wagner, a Canadian Mountie of German heritage, in this action-thriller about Nazi spies and diabolical schemes.

When a small German reconnaissance team is deployed in the Canadian wilderness, Wagner intercepts them at the site of the drop. Masquerading as a Nazi sympathizer, Wagner manages to win the Germans' trust long enough to find out the object of their mission... and stop them, before it's too late.
