Tapkaara is a reference to the dance style of the
Ainu people indigenous to the north Japanese island
of Hokkaido. The 1954 symphony of that name is in
three movements.
Sinfonia Tapkaara, 1954 revised 1979
1. Lento molto - Allegro (11:28)
2. Adagio (6:21)
3. Vivace (8:08)
4. Ritmica Ostinata for piano and orchestra, 1961
revised 1972 (21:33)
5. Symphonic Fantasia No. 1, 1981 (13:15)
Most western fans are unfamiliar with Ifukube's
symphonic output, understandably. While certainly not
as vast as his film score output, his symphonic works
are much more developed, musically, than his film
scores, due to the fact that he usually had very
little time to work on his film scores.
