Original soundtrack from Paul Winters movie with director-as-star plus Ricco Ross, David Midthunder. Terry Plumeri begins with broadly drawn main theme in minor key, manages both sadness, grandeur. Wooden flute evokes Native American color, dynamic orchestral sweep evokes conflict. Action sequences are impressive: Plumeri avoids two typical action ideas in similar epics (dissonant chaos, elegiac strings), instead anchors with pulsating rhythms, adding layers of melody above. One of many highlights: soaring French horns in unison play dramatic melody during "Death of the Colonel's Wife and Moving West" then retreat as strings take up tragic variant. Another highlight: "A New Land... An Old Friendship". Here composer brings in rich chordal idea for strings, spotlights bassoon in high register before closing with reprise of chordal idea. Yet another highlight: same chordal idea returns in "Home Life" but carries new identity with solo violin riding at very top of line. Expressive idea! Crowning moment may be near close of "The Final Battle and Massacre": in the midst of conflict, rhythms build, music crescendoes when suddenly everyone tacets save trumpets, French horns playing minor-major triads. Wow! Even with variety of material, composer keeps tragic feel close at hand: melodies remain sympathetic to story throughout. Traditional score with contemporary sensibility offers substantial reward. Lou Diamond Phillips contributes lyrics to closing theme. Terry Plumeri conducts Moscow Philharmonic. Powerful album delivers a knockout!
