Thriller (also known as Boris Karloff’s Thriller) is an American anthology television series that aired during the 1960–61 and 1961–62 seasons on NBC. The show featured host Boris Karloff introducing a mix of macabre horror tales and suspense thrillers Reruns currently now air on various classic TV networks.

Thriller was an early milestone in Goldsmith’s career, one of the television steppingstones en route to big-screen fame. Goldsmith would ultimately score 16 episodes of Thriller (about a third of all those with original music) including some of the scariest and best-remembered hours.

This is top grade Goldsmith, a masterful use of small orchestra to full effect He clearly learned from Herrmann and excelled the master of suspense. I have no musical skills to articulate why I think it is so good but I am generally not impressed with low-budget TV scores from the 60s. So I hope you give it a try.

Perhaps the last true goldmine of Goldsmith music that remains undiscovered as far as commercial release is what THRILLER'S music is. Essential ground breaking stuff that demands to be heard and rewards being heard. Great is the word from this music. This CD is not great but it's not bad either by any means.

Goldsmith said once that thanks to his work in television he never got a job he wasn't ready for in features, Thriller shows what he means as the many and varied Thriller episodes he scored gave him a template for many future film scores during the rest of his career. The show is one that he, and Morton Stevens reshaped musically, and with it being an anthology each show offered a different hour long "feature" to be scored and those scores lasted from 18 to occasionally nearly 30 minutes in length. Other television series, like Man From Uncle, had a musical tone set by Goldsmith but he himself usually moved on to other work rather than stick around to score many more episodes but with Thriller he contributed more music than any other series he touched. If you like his Twilight Zone scores these are not just more of the same but sort of the same and even better--as Thriller had a larger budget for an orchestra nearly twice the size--though still under 30 players in total.

Ok, so it's high time the music get released in some form, assuming the original recordings are lost, a rerecording is the most you can hope for, for this essential music.

This Cd brings you suites from 6 episodes which give you about half or a little less of the scores from each episode represented. The question is when was the last half a score you bought of Goldsmith's that you found entirely satisfying?

That said what you get here is mostly quite good, the one real let down being HAY-FORM AND BILL-HOOK which is hurt by not-quite-up-to-the-task- French horn playing. If you've bought other Nic Raine Goldsmith re-recordings from this same orchestra you've run into this problem before. Though he and they have gotten much better at Goldsmith over the years.

The liner notes mention that this collection does not attempt to match the original recordings--this is a statement which covers a
possible world of sins in either tempo or performance. Also though they claim these are arguably the best episodes or best music neither is really true, but you can hope if this CD sells well enough they will get to more of the deep worthy goldmine they have just tapped the surface of. Or perhaps the original scores will surface if time has not taken them from us.

A for effort with this release and a must have with a slight degree of disappointment--fewer episodes and full scores would totally do justice to these scores until then and if you've never heard this music you should snap this up.

Having listened to the isolated music tracks on the DVDs, I was a little cautious on buying this title. But being rare Goldsmith tv scores and liking other Raine releases, I gave it a shot. While I agree, slightly, that these are a little disappointing in their accuracy, I found myself listening to this title again and again. So, while these recordings don't "nail" the originals, it's still a mighty fine listening experience.
