Starring:  Christopher Plummer, Alan Cumming, Edward Fox, Jim Broadbent, Tom Courtenay, Charlie Hunnam, Jamie Bell, Anne Hathaway, Romola Garai, Barry Humphries, Nathan Lane, Timothy Spall, Juliet Stevenson
Directed By:  Douglas McGrath

“Swift, engaging entertainment…a colorful, affecting collage of Dickensian moods and motifs, a movie that elicits an overwhelming desire to plunge into 900 pages of 19th-century prose.” – A.O. Scott, The New York Times

“Positively brisk, sparkling new adaptation…Trust and deceit, generosity and meanness are fleshed out by a deft cast, including…Christopher Plummer in a terrifyingly good performance as Nicholas’ heartless rich uncle.”– Lisa Schwarzbaum, Entertainment Weekly

Writer-director Douglas McGrath (Emma) brings us a cleverly pared-down but potent version of Charles Dickens’ massive and often darkly humorous study of Victorian corruption, Nicholas Nickleby (2002). The extraordinary cast includes Christopher Plummer as Nicholas’ evil financier uncle; Jim Broadbent and Juliet Stevenson as the loathsome Mr. and Mrs. Squeers; and, more brightly, Tom Courtenay, Anne Hathaway, Jamie Bell, Timothy Spall, Romola Garai, and Charlie Hunnam as Nicholas. Also highlighted by a score from Rachel Portman, available on this Twilight Time release as an isolated track.

This is one of the best film versions of anything by Dickens!!! The cast is so finely-chosen, they spare lots of descriptive script pages, and the acting is beautifully done, heartbreaking, and exhilarating. Writer/Director McGrath has condensed a very long book into a film that works beautifully! Jamie Bell will break your heart as Smike, but the entire cast and the Director really shine in this film! This Blu-ray is simply beautiful. The transfer is luminous and magnificent!!! DO NOT MISS!!! Buy this disc. You shall return to it, many times.
