NEAR MINT - UNSEALED - ONLY ONE AVAILABLE
We are so excited to launch our new Varèse 500 series by bringing back Georges Delerue’s gorgeous, spiritual, powerful, moving, and Academy Award-nominated score for Norman Jewison’s 1985 film “Agnes of God.” It’s hard to believe that it has been almost 25 years since our last CD reissue of this score, way back in May of 1992. It was a sad time then. We had just lost the legendary French composer two months earlier, on March 20. At the time we reissued both “Agnes of God” as well as his Oscar-winning “A Little Romance.” In the years since, both CDs have become very rare and valuable.
For this new edition of the score we remastered the album to address a few tone anomalies, along with a few room noises, while we were at it. We have added new liner notes, in addition to retaining the 1992 notes. Another change is that, for the first time ever, we have applied some of the actual track titles to the cues, where originally they were all simply listed as movements of a “Symphonic Suite for Chorus and Orchestra.” The CD actually contains more music than is in the film, with a number of cues, and portions of cues, that were not included in the final cut, so it wasn't possible to be completely accurate with this, but the album does finally have track titles.
The score is a classic and one of Georges Delerue’s very best.
Dr. Martha Livingston (Jane Fonda) is a court-appointed psychiatrist sent to evaluate Sister Agnes (Meg Tilly), a young nun whose infant has been found strangled. With Agnes claiming a virgin conception and having no memory of giving birth, Livingston must distinguish between the lies and the nun's perception-altering faith. Complicating her investigation, Livingston continually clashes with the overbearing Mother Miriam Ruth (Anne Bancroft), who insists that Livingston leave Agnes alone.
About Varèse 500 ... A New Series from Varèse Sarabande
Though so many companies are releasing fewer and fewer physical discs these days, we still love CDs at Varèse Sarabande. Even with as many CDs as we are releasing, we realized that we have a large catalog of titles that have been out of print for 10 or 20 years, or even longer! For those who have never had a chance to own some of our wonderful releases from the 1980s or 90s, we have now created a new series just for you!
Varèse 500 will offer special limited editions of just 500 copies of some absolutely wonderful scores that may have otherwise just remained in our archives or solely on digital platforms like iTunes. We have even taken advantage of the opportunity to re master many of these to give them just a little extra shine.
At 500 copies, they don't need to be blockbusters. The series will consist of some very special films and film scores by some of our greatest composers. This will be an exceptional new series of film music classics revisited. -VARESE SARABANDE
