DOCTOR DOLITTLE (1967) (BLU-RAY)
Starring:  Richard Attenborough, Peter Bull, Rex Harrison, Samantha Eggar, Anthony Newley, Geoffrey Holder
Directed By:  Richard Fleischer
Composed By:  Alexander Courage, Leslie Bricusse, Lionel Newman

“It’s impossible not to be impressed by Rex Harrison and his marvelous menagerie.”
– Richard Luck, Film4

“Leslie Bricusse’s adaptation retains [the original’s] delightful aspects…His music and lyrics are admirably suited to the scenario.”
– Variety

The great Leslie Bricusse brings us this musical adaptation of Hugh Lofting’s delightful series of children’s books, Doctor Dolittle (1967), with Rex Harrison starring as the eponymous fellow who famously has the ability to “talk to the animals.” Samantha Eggar, Anthony Newley, and Richard Attenborough co-star; Richard Fleischer (20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) directs; but the real fascinators here are the animals, some real, some fantastical.

I am a traditionalist and avid film buff, and I am hoping this blu-ray release contains the restored complete Roadshow version of DOCTOR DOLITTLE. The general release version was substantially cut years ago, and it left out a few beautiful tunes and the beginning prologue was shortened and re-cut considerably(!)Please release the complete version of this amazing tour-de-force starring Rex Harrison and Anthony Newley. Otherwise, I will refrain from purchasing it(!) Thank you!

This is the original roadshow print and I must say that this Twilight Time Blu-Ray is absolutely gorgeous. The bright and vivid colors just jump right off the screen. It is an enchanting film with wonderful songs performed by a brilliant Anthony Newley and the incomparable Rex Harrison, who sings much like Prof Henry Higgins. Kids will love it. I loved it myself until the last 20 or 30 minutes. Don't forget that these are the days before computers interfered with movie making, but the ending with the pink snail and the flying moth looks so fake that it kind of ruins the movie, for me anyway. But I enjoyed this musical anyway. It's not the best musical, but it's entertaining.
