“A long-standing dream project for Charlton Heston, who directs as well as stars…The film soars whenever the actors soliloquize…Eric Porter is brilliant as Enobarbus.”
– Hal Erickson, allmovie.com

“A robust cinematic version [of Shakespeare’s play], with surprisingly grand battle scenes shot in Spain on land and sea…Potent tragedy.”
– Mark R. Hasan, KQEK.com

The iconic Charlton Heston stars in and makes his directorial début with Antony and Cleopatra (1972), playing Shakespeare’s titular hero, a man torn between grand plans for Rome and his passion for the Egyptian queen (Hildegard Neil). The supporting cast features a panoply of great character actors – Eric Porter, Fernando Rey, Freddie Jones, and Julian Glover among them – and the score from the singular John Scott is available on this Twilight Time release as an isolated track.

A wonderful and underrated movie. The picture quality of the Twilight Time Blu-ray is excellent and you get the added bonus of watching the movie with the Overture and Exit Music. It's a real pity that this film didn't
get the praise it deserves in Charlton Heston's lifetime.

For the majority of the film, the picture quality is a waxy, smudgy DNR mess. Eliminating grain was clearly the goal, although it can still be observed in some scenes, especially bright outdoor scenes. At times, minor stability issues and flickering are apparent, as well as occasional flecks.

The audio has a high level of background hiss / white noise compared to the audio level of the dialogue, and is presented in mono.

The isolated music track by comparison is presented in stereo and is beautifully clear. It's especially a revelation in scenes where the score has been mixed so quietly in the film that it might as well be non-existent. Unfortunately, some of the wonderful score that plays during the movie is not present when you switch to the isoated score. (The score is also available separately on CD, although I can't speak to whether there is any difference in which cuts appear here and which appear on the CD.)

The presentation is quite an overall disappointment for a film from 1972. As always, your mileage may vary depending on your tolerance for such issues.
