“People came out in droves for [Peyton Place], and it’s not at all hard to see why – it’s corn in the grand style, much of it delivered with sweep and conviction, and the intrigues come thick and fast.”
– Jonathan Rosenbaum, The Chicago Reader

“Under Mark Robson’s direction, every one of the performers delivers a topnotch portrayal. Diane Varsi particularly is standout as the rebellious teenager Allison…Also in top form in a difficult role is Hope Lange.”
– Variety

Grace Metalious’ scandalous best-seller about the sordid life of a small New England town is given the high-gloss Hollywood treatment in Peyton Place (1957), a hugely successful melodrama produced by Jerry Wald and directed by Mark Robson, with John Michael Hayes providing the screenplay. A cast led by established star Lana Turner (then suffering her own real-life melodrama) is also studded with terrific performances from relative newcomers including Diane Varsi, Hope Lange, Lee Philips, and Russ Tamblyn, and further highlighted by an extraordinary score from Franz Waxman.

This just arrived and I haven't play it yet, but I notice there is no isolated film score track! (No, it doesn't say there IS one in the TT listing). WHAT a shame...and disappointment. This is one of my favorite Waxman scores and I was looking forward to hearing it. Oh well, guess I'll just have to rely on my well-worn RCA original LP.

Having long enjoyed the good quality dvd of this film, I thought I'd seen it all. The Twilight Time Blu-ray's excellent detail and natural filmlike look have breathed new life into a film I've watched more times than I should like to admit. (Probably has something to do with having been old enough back then to read the book but too young to see the (then shocking) film). Anyhow simply delighted with the transfer, which is one of the best looking fifties films I've seen on Blu-ray.

For your information the complete score to Peyton Place was re-recorded and released on the Varese Saraband label in 2000. It’s still available on many websites including Amazon.

my favorite Cinemascope-Drama from that era. Simply a great story with great actors (happy enough to have met Terry Moore). Love the blury. The picture quality is good. Like the Commentary with Terry and Russ and also like the short documentary "On Location" and "Hollywood Backstories". Well done. Hopefully Franz Waxman score will be released soon on CD
