This box is dedicated to the German composer Hans-Martin Majewski (1911-1997) who was one of the most famous and prolific film composers during the 50s and 60s. For US film buffs he may be mainly known as composer for the films THE VISIT (with Ingrid Bergman and Anthony Quinn) from 1963 and ESCAPE FROM EAST BERLIN (by Robert Siodmak) from 1962 which were co-productions with the USA. Also the anti-war movie THE BRIDGE from 1959 which was also scored by Majewski was nominated for an Oscar in 1959.

In this box there are mostly suites from more than 25 Majewski movies from a period of 30 years from 1948 till 1978 with the emphasis on the 50s and early 60s. There are many symphonic tracks but also some more jazzy ones (above all on CD 6) and some more with a light touch. Compare Majewski's symphonic style a bit with Friedhofer or a Waxman and he was very versatile in many genres. Some of the German movies have international stars such as Romy Schneider, Maria Schell, Curd Jürgens, Hardy Krüger, Gert Fröbe and Horst Buchholz. The set features more than 30 minutes from one of the first post-war German movies with the title LIEBE 47 (an adaptation of a famous German anti-war stage play) and this may be the oldest orchestral German film score whose original recording has been preserved.

The CD set contains a detailed 32-page booklet with many stills from the films and with commentaries about almost all the scores by the composer himself. It is a quite unique document of classic German film music. - Alhambra
