SCARLET DIVA (Argento film)
A harrowing, surreal, and at times darkly comic semi-autobiographical depiction of a desperate actress' journey into the black heart of the entertainment industry, Asia Argento's Scarlet Diva makes it's stateside debut courtesy of Media Blasters. Shot on digital video, the feature is presented in 1.85:1 widescreen with an anamorphic transfer for widescreen televisions. With a crisp, sharp image the colors are clear and the blacks fairly solid for a shot-on-video feature. Though from time to time there is noticeable video interference, this is intended by the artist and inherent to the film itself and not the DVD presentation. The audio, presented in Dolby Digital Stereo, is rich and full despite it's minimal function and directional effects. In both sound and image, this film is certainly well anchored in it's punkish sensibilities, and Media Blasters is faithful to those sensibilities in their presentation of the feature. Argento fans will no-doubt appreciate the intimate and informative extras on the disc, including an insightful interview with the Scarlet Diva herself as well as an equally compelling commentary track, a great photo gallery and some brief liner notes. With both the interview and commentary providing rare insight into Miss Argento's inspirations as well as the experience of having her legendary father Dario and uncle Claudio produce the feature, viewers are treated to a fascinating peek into the worlds of both the celebrity and the filmmaker. As well, Japanese film buffs are sure to be tempted by a trio of trailers which includes exciting previews for both Versus and Visitor Q in addition to trailers for The House on the Edge of the Park and Scarlet Diva itself. Overall, stateside fans of Asia Argento will be thrilled by Media Blasters stateside release of her much anticipated feature debut. 2000
