CHE! (1969) (BLU-RAY)
Starring:  Omar Sharif, Jack Palance, Cesare Danova, Robert Loggia, Woody Strode
Directed By:  Richard Fleischer
Composed By:  Lalo Schifrin

Made just two years after his death, Che! (1969) is the Hollywood version of the life of Argentinian doctor-turned-revolutionary Che Guevara (Omar Sharif), who became the legendary partner of rebel fighter Fidel Castro (Jack Palance) in the ultimately successful Cuban Revolution. Directed by the gifted Richard Fleischer (Violent Saturday, 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea) and featuring a spectacular score by Lalo Schifrin (available on this Twilight Time release as an isolated track), the film traces the fabled course of Guevara’s struggle and final disillusionment.

“One of the bizarre products of Hollywood's brief flirtation with revolution in the ’60s, a fence-sitting but occasionally amusing account of Guevara's career. Remarkable for its eccentric casting of Palance as an amphetamine-popping Castro.”

In my review of the 1969 film of "CHE!", I was NOT impressed with it because it was a very negative portrait of the Argentine revolutionary that helped Fidel Castro and the other revolutionaries liberate Cuba from the Batista regime in 1959. What I want to point out was that Guevara was portrayed as some kind of bad guy who simply, but allegedly, has killed his way to the top of the leadership of Cuba and that his actions were considered "evil" by his detractors which happen to be mostly Cuban exiles and their supporters and benefactors in America. I think this film just misses the fact that Che Guevara did about plenty of positive actions and that this film only shows the negative aspects of his life and career throughout the 1960's, like the film showing off the alleged executions of rebels who simply had made mistakes along with the men connected to the Batista regime, who were the real criminals that made life for ordinary Cubans difficult as ever. I can also say that this movie does awfully bad in giving a hatchet job on Che Guevara's legacy just to satisfy the enemies of Cuba and the present revolutionary government that has been in power since 1959. I may even add that this movie completely made a rush of showing off Che's life and career in such poor detail and I rather prefer the more superior 2008 two-part version of "CHE" with Benicio Del Toro which was more accurate in cinematic detail than the more inferior 1969 version that starred Omar Sharif as "Che" and Jack Palance as "Fidel Castro." All in all, I would NOT recommend the 1969 film of "CHE!" unless IF you're just a right-wing fanatic with a grudge against Communism even after the Cold War. Enough said.
