Dick Worth, corridore automobilista, arriva a Stoccolma proprio mentre la notizia del giorno è la fuga dall'Unione Sovietica di Svetlana Golyadkin. In seguito incontra per caso Ester che se ne va col suo accendino e che, ad un concerto, scambia il proprio mantello con quello di Greta Fuller. Ester viene uccisa proprio mentre Dick era andato a riprendere il suo accendino. Ed anche Greta verrà trovata morta. Dick si viene così a trovare al centro di una girandola di situazioni che ruotano attorno al rapporto Fuller, riguardante Svetlana. Americani, Russi e forse qualcun altro sembra abbiano preso Dick per un bersaglio a Stoccolma, a Zurigo e infine a Londra.
