I COULD GO ON SINGING (1963) (BLU-RAY)
Starring:  Judy Garland, Jack Klugman, Aline MacMahon, Gregory Phillips, Dirk Bogarde, Russell Waters
Directed By:  Ronald Neame
Composed By:  Mort Lindsey

“Handsomely mounted and endowed with Judy Garland, one of the great stylists of her generation…a soulful performance is etched…She also belts over four numbers as only she can belt them.” – Variety

“A star vehicle in the best sense of the word…In the sensitive hands of director Ronald Neame, the film strikes an excellent balance of on-stage performance and engrossing backstage drama. For Garland’s fans the movie is nearly perfect, and rises well above ordinary expectations.” – Stuart Galbraith IV, DVDtalk.com

In her last film, I Could Go On Singing (1963), the legendary Judy Garland stars as an American singer who visits London and can’t resist the temptation to meet up once again with a lost love (Dirk Bogarde) and the now teenaged son she left him to care for many years before. Ronald Neame (Tunes of Glory, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie) directs, and the title tune is by the incomparable duo of Harold Arlen and E.Y. (“Yip”) Harburg.

I was quite excited to see that Judy Garland's final film, "I Could Go On Singing" was receiving a Blu Ray release. I received my copy a few days ago and was compelled to write a review. The quality of the film is fantastic. Colors are bright and resolution is sharp. There are few extras. (A documentary about the making of the film would have been nice.) The most exciting extras are the alternate audio tracks. There is a stereo mix of the music score and songs sans dialogue. (Would have been nice to have the stereo versions of the songs and score within the film itself.) There are two commentary tracks - one with producer, Lawrence Turman and another with film historians David Del Valle and Steven Peros. The Turman track is moderately interesting when they are actually discussing the Garland film. There is far too much time wasted on Turman's other film productions and very little about the making of "I Could Go On Singing". The second commentary track is more interesting however it is filled with errors. They even get the dates of Judy's "A Star Is Born", Carnegie Hall concert and aborted role in "Annie Get Your Gun" wrong. (Didn't anyone fact check and have some notes to ensure that the information presented was accurate?) It is unfortunate that both commentary tracks really serve no purpose than to villify Garland and add to the already long list of incorrect information that has floated around for years and years. Had they used someone like noted Judy Garland historian, John Fricke to produce a commentary track it would have been an interesting, well-balanced and accurate behind the scenes look at Garland's film swan song. A missed opportunity to be sure. Grateful to have the film in my collection in high definition, however.

I couldn't be more excited to order Judy Garlands final film, "I could go on Singing" along with Susan Haywards "I want to Live". Both arrived very fast so kudos to Twilight Time. I watched I Want to Live" first and was impressed by the quality. I then sat to watch "I Could Go in Singing" popped it in my played and NOTHING. After a half hour or more I kept ejecting, reloading and no so much as the standard label warning appeared, nor did Twilight Times logo or the menu. My bluray said incompatible. It was too late to call TT so I had to wait. A very nice lady answered and her response was "yes, that title sticks" and " Did you get the logo at least? Frankly, I could care less about the logo. She said others were experiencing the same problems. They quickly sent a replacement in a standard jewel case. I popped it, after 20 minutes of waiting I did get the warning screen and then nothing. I powered down, did a firmware update and tried again. Just the warning notice. Cut to two hours later, then I got the TT logo and again it froze. Back to powering down, restarting all the while calling TT to no answer. When you spend this type of money on a bluray which are now as low as 5.00 to 21.00, the price they charge I expected quality. After so many hours I gave up. Left two messages for TT, no return call. I emailed, no response. I said I would be happy to return both. Who needs three copies of the same film that does not work. After 2 days and no responses they made it clear they would not refund me, no replace any more copies. (Note: ALL MY BLURAYS work fine, just like all the other TT titles I bought). I decided to try again. After again 20 plus minutes waiting on the warning another 15 min on the TT logo the movie menu FINALLY appeared. I clicked play movie and that's where it stopped again. I called again asking to PLEASE call me back, PLEASE send another copy or refund me. Nothing on all counts. The fact the customer service operator asked me if the disc was sticking and locking leads me to believe this is a known problem. I finally after 2 hours managed to get the film to play, great quality picture wise. I decided to watch again last night and after 15 minutes of hearing my bluray looking for something to read it would not load. TT - I paid good money for this. PLEASE SEND A WORKING REPLACEMENT. I am happy to return the others. You know who I am based on the countless calls and emails.. PLEASE do the right thing. For those looking to order, hold off until they repress this mess. Ed
