ROLLERBALL (1975 / ENCORE EDITION) (BLU-RAY)
Starring:  Ralph Richardson, James Caan, John Houseman, Maud Adams, John Beck, Moses Gunn
Directed By:  Norman Jewison
Composed By:  Andre Previn

“Sensational futuristic drama…stars James Caan in an excellent performance as a famed athlete who fights for his identity and free will.” – Variety

“The questions raised about the relationship between corporate power and sporting events are valid and intriguing…Caan and Richardson are excellent, and the rollerball sequences are fast-paced and interesting.”– TV Guide

Rollerball (1975) posits a dystopian future (2018!) in which war has been replaced by the titular game, a gladiatorial spectacle of violence that helps keep the global populace entertained and anesthetized. Director Norman Jewison and writer William Harrison further give us an athletic champion, Jonathan E (the great James Caan), whose individual expertise defeats the worldwide corporate leadership’s design: to emphasize the futility of individual effort. Corporate bigwigs (icily incarnated by John Houseman) need Jonathan to retire, but Jonathan begins to have his own dangerous ideas.

Bought this as one of there special promotions, was actually surprised, as I had thought it had sold out. Once again for me, say this film with my father at the Century in Oakland, (no longer exists), and was close to the Oakland Airport. I enjoyed the film then, and now watching with my son on a big TV screen enjoyed it still.

It predicted in the film what many have felt today, that corporations, not governments really run the world. Amazing that such a film got made at the time. Well worth seeing. Even the sound here as apparently been upgraded to a feeling of stereophonic, which kind of amazed me, James Caan I guess could be difficult, and it is sad that he was really underused, and really never got to his full potential, especially as an action star. An amazing actor.

As I write this review, I just want to say RIP to Nick Redman.
