“An entertaining US Cavalry-Indian conflict, sparked by an opportunist army general who sacrifices dedicated soldiers to his ambition. Brawling fisticuffs, comedy and romantic triangle…until an exciting climax.” – Variety
“The large supporting cast is terrific. Caan is good as a stubborn recruit, and veteran character actor Pickens provides his usual comic relief…Greatly enhanced by the photography of veteran cameraman Howe. The battle sequences are excellent.” – TV Guide
The Glory Guys (1965) is screenwriter Sam Peckinpah’s gloss (adapted from Hoffman Birney’s novel) on the Custer/Little Big Horn story, directed by Arnold Laven. Andrew Duggan stars as the ill-fated general, badly overseeing a cavalry troop peopled by the spectacular likes of Tom Tryon, Harve Presnell, Michael Anderson Jr., Slim Pickens, and a very young James Caan in a standout performance. Also featuring Senta Berger as the requisite love interest; shot by the singular James Wong Howe; and supported by a stunning Riz Ortolani score.
