YEAR OF THE COMET (1992) (BLU-RAY)
Starring:  Louis Jourdan, Penelope Ann Miller, Tim Daly, Art Malik, Ian Richardson, Ian McNeice, Julia McCarthy
Directed By:  Peter Yates
Composed By:  Hummie Mann

“William Goldman’s screenplay for Year of the Comet has the charming élan of an old-fashioned caper story…Mr. Daly is meant to recall the young Robert Redford and really does.”
– Janet Maslin, The New York Times

“Daly shows off his mischievous charm here…Yates has the right timing, Goldman’s script sets it up and closes it, and the music (by Hummie Mann) is perfect.”
– Andrew Wickliffe, The Stop Button

A lively script by William Goldman (Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid) and taut direction by Peter Yates (Bullitt) provide the keynotes for Year of the Comet (1992), a romantic comedy thriller about the pursuit of the most valuable bottle of wine in history. Timothy Daly, Penelope Ann Miller, and Louis Jourdan (in his last film role) star, racing from Scotland to France, with musical accompaniment from Hummie Mann.

This is a movie that doesn't quite come off, hard as it tries. The cast is okay but it's not clear what the villains are really looking for,and there is more than one set of villains. In this, his last film, Louis Jourdan seems to go bonkers with no build-up for the reason. Too bad this is his Swan Song. There is no sense of tension and its hard to care about what happens to the leads. The director admits that he was trying for something like Charade and admittedly, there are some surprises. But only a better pair of leads - Cary Grant and Audrey Hepburn come to mind - could have pulled this off and made it believable. The scenery is nicely photographed so if you still want to watch it, the upgrade is probably worth it.

Admittedly, this movie owes much to the formula of "romance-adventure" movies popularized by Romancing the Stone a half-decade earlier. Judging it from within that context, I think this movie is mostly successful in delivering a light-hearted, romantic adventure against the stunning backdrop of the Scottish countryside. I really enjoyed this movie back then, and was happy to see it is released on blu-ray. I thought Penelope Ann Miller was perfectly cast for the lead role as an intelligent, talented, workaholic and single wine appraiser struggling to be recognized within the family business. She is beautiful in a very unassuming, librarian-next-door kind of way and a redhead to boot. Tim Daly, who I always liked from Wings, plays the wisecracking, arrogant professional troubleshooter--complete with helicopter and Tom Selleck mustache. And the late, great Louis Jordan played the reptilian Euro-creep as no one else could. I am hopeful that the blu-ray treatment will improve the picture quality and show off the beautiful scenery. I will post an update once I have a chance to screen the blu-ray version.
