A MAN CALLED PETER (1955) (BLU-RAY)
Starring:  Marjorie Rambeau, Richard Todd, Jean Peters, Jill Esmond, Les Tremayne, Billy Chapin, Richard Garrick
Directed By:  Henry Koster
Composed By:  Alfred Newman

“A surprising and extraordinary film…Richard Todd in the principal role brings a fervor and eloquence to his acting that fairly lift him right out of the large screen.”
– Bosley Crowther, The New York Times

“One of the rare Hollywood films about religion not to drown in piety…a good yarn combining interesting sentiments and solid production values.”
– TV Guide

Based on Catherine Marshall’s 1951 book about her husband, the preacher Peter Marshall, A Man Called Peter (1955) tells the inspiring story of the Scots-born minister (a terrific Richard Todd) who emigrated to America, ultimately becoming pastor at Washington, DC’s New York Avenue Presbyterian Church and Chaplain of the United States Senate. At the same time, the film is an out-and-out romance, detailing the touching relationship between Peter and Catherine (the vibrant Jean Peters, in her last film). Veteran Henry Koster directs, and the sublime Alfred Newman provides an appropriately soaring musical score, available on this Twilight Time release as an isolated track.

When A MAN CALLED PETER opened in Salt Lake City in October of 1955 the Deseret News editor said of the film: "Every once in a while a motion picture comes along that is more than a movie. It is a touching human experience." I agree. The Blu-ray release for this title has been eagerly awaited by me even though I own the fine DVD rendering. The film was photographed in CinemaScope at the time that they were released in the very wide format of 2.55:1 which was later changed to 2.35:1 so the Blu-ray version will enhance the film greatly along with the original 4-track stereophonic track that was part of the film. An excellent score by the great Alfred Newman on an isolated track will be nice. I'm not exactly thrilled with the new cover but Fox themselves struggled with the proper way to advertise this very special film. However the Blu-ray cover that you have provided is better then Fox's DVD cover which pictures Richard Todd wearing a collar that he refuses to ware in the film. Dr. Marshall's son Peter was amused by this costume change when the DVD came out. My orders is in and I am looking forward to receiving this much awaited title.

I've just finished viewing the Twilight Blu-ray for A MAN CALLED PETER and I am pleased to report that it pleases in every way. The Blu-ray upgrade greatly enhances the Academy Award nominated cinematography and the faithful reproduction of the very directional 4-track stereophonic track is a true pleasure. The performances of both Richard Todd and Jean Peters (in her final film role) are extraordinary. I am also impressed with Julie Kirgo's included notes which give some insights to how and why this film has captured the spirituality of Peter Marshall's life. There is no film that I am aware of that contains such powerfully delivered sermons as those contained in this film. If this is a film that touches you as it has me you may want to get a copy of Catherine Marshall's book TO LIVE AGAIN which enlightens the reader as to how this Hollywood made film became the spiritual powerhouse that it is. This truly is a one of a kind motion picture!
