“Savage as it is, Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? remains, paradoxically, among Tashlin’s most joyous works. Continuously vibrating with comic energy, the Cinemascope screen is a playpen of jubilant brassiness, compounded by superb performances.”
– Fernando F. Croce, Slant Magazine
“From its caustic ad-spoof titles to Jayne Mansfield’s squeaky Monroe parody, Frank Tashlin’s snappy satire is one of the great ‘lost’ studio comedies…A satire on consumerism and the American dream that still retains its bite.”
– Simon Crook, Empire Magazine
Writer-director Frank Tashlin’s satire on advertising, Hollywood, pop culture, and just about everything else he can think of, Will Success Spoil Rock Hunter? (1957) stars Tony Randall as the echt ad man, loving and hating his profession in equal measure. His biggest challenge comes when, soliciting an endorsement for Stay-Put Lipstick, he lands a big star – Jayne Mansfield’s hilarious Rita Marlowe – in more ways than one. Fantastically subversive, this candy-colored bitter pill was allegedly a powerful influence on none other than Jean-Luc Godard.
