Shot concurrently with "The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring" and "The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers," "The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King" is the third and final film in director Peter Jackson's epic trilogy based on the works of J.R.R. Tolkein. Picking up where the second film left off, this chapter of the saga finds Frodo (Elijah Wood) attempting to complete his quest to destroy the ring against Gollum's nefarious attempts to thwart him. Meanwhile, Aragorn (Viggo Mortensen) is revealed to be the true heir of the kings. Ian McKellan and Christopher Lee reprise their roles as, respectively, Gandalf and Saruman. The day before its wide release in theaters, "The Return of the King" closed out a special program at select American theaters that allowed fans to watch extended versions of all three series entries in order, an experience that tops ten hours. 2003
