“Mirren gives a tough, earnest performance in this underrated drama-thriller.”
– Peter Bradshaw, The Guardian
“Hussy’s main assets are its strong performances and writer-director Matthew Chapman’s (Runaway Jury) successful efforts to capture the milieu of an ordinary prostitute’s daily grind in smoke-filled clubs where you can almost smell the sweat. It’s a singularly unglamorous portrait, the antithesis of Pretty Woman.”
– Stuart Galbraith, DVDTalk.com
An evocative, rougher-edged, British-flavored throwback to 1940s roadhouse melodramas about bruised, wary lovers out to escape dubious pasts, Hussy (1980) stars the always terrific Helen Mirren as a veteran hooker based out of a tawdry London cabaret and movie-debuting John Shea as the backstage technician who falls for her. Their breakaway future together becomes clouded by the unexpected and simultaneous return of her criminal ex-lover (Paul Angelis) and his former partner in smuggling (Murray Salem), each bringing danger and potential disaster. It’s also the first film of writer/director – and thriller specialist – Matthew Chapman (Strangers Kiss, Heart of Midnight, The Ledge).
