The peerless Gary Cooper plays Joe Chapin, a small-town, patrician lawyer of innate decency wed to a cold, unloving wife (Geraldine Fitzgerald), who is wrongly pushed into politics and seeks solace in a rejuvenating romance with a younger woman (Suzy Parker).
