DAIKYOJYU GAPPA (GAPPA THE TRIPHIBIAN MONSTERS) (CD)
Composed by: Seitaro Omori

The latest digitally remastered original soundtrack from 60's classic "Kaiju" (Monster) film DAIKYOJU GAPPA. This was the first and last monster film produced by Nikkatsu. Contains original score composed by Seitaro Omori and a theme song sung by Katsuhiko Miki. Reissue.

An expedition in the South Pacific lands on a tropical island where the natives worship the mysterious deity Gappa. An earthquake opens up an underground cavern and a baby reptile is discovered inside. The natives warn the foreigners to leave the hatching alone, but they don't listen and take it back to a zoo in Japan. Soon after, momma and papa Gappa start smashing Tokyo looking for their kidnapped child.

Directed by Hiroshi Noguchi, Stars: Tamio Kawaji, Yoko Yamamoto, Yuji Kodaka. 1967 Japan.

Excellent re-release of Seitaro Omori's score for Nikkatsu's only entry into Kaiju Cinema.

Omori's score for GAPPA is unlike his contemporaries at the time (Ifukube, Sato, Kikuchi) as he only scores about a third of the total film. His score focuses more on sentimentality over military marches and monster battles. However there is an excellent cue included for the Gappa's first attack that was left out of the final cut of the film that you will find here. Towards the end of the film when Gappa and its parents are reunited, there is a Japanese vocal ballad sung in the background. Fortunately like the earlier VAP issue of this soundtrack, the two international vocal-less versions are here too.

The most exciting part of this re-issue for me, was the inclusion of the international version main and ending titles, which will be immediately recognizable to anyone familar with the AIP-TV release of Gappa, called MONSTER FROM A PREHISTORIC PLANET. This music, written by Omori for a 1959 Japanese teen drama/comedy called YOUTH SONG is seamlessly tacked on to replace the original main and end titles, which included Japanese vocals.

As with other Cinema-Kan releases, sound quality is very good. I found it improved over VAP's release of GAPPA from 20 years ago.
