Charming, outrageous, lyrical, extraordinary, pithy, rarified, tuneful, earnest, ravishing; put them all together and what do they spell? Cole Porter, that master of melody and lyric invention. To that we can add witty, urbane, naughty, heartfelt, impish, and sophisticated.
With Cole Porter Revisited Volume V we come to the end of the Ben Bagley series and what a series it's been. It seems fitting to end with the final album in the five-volume series of Cole Porter rarities. While it's a wonderful cast, it was a time from when money was scarce and some of the star power of the other volumes wasn't available to him. And the wonderful arrangements by Arthur Siegel somehow feel so right for this final Porter album, rather like a Ben Bagley stage revue.
The songs included in this volume are a cornucopia of Cole rarities and seldom-heard songs and each and every one is a gem. They're from little-known shows or films, unused and cut songs from various projects. They are filled with that unique Porter wit and melody and the wonderful company delivers them perfectly: Ann Hampton Callaway, Sandy Stewart, Arthur Siegel, and two legends, Tommy Tune and Julie Wilson. Tune taps and Wilson croons with that unique and wondrous way of hers, and you can just hear the affection everyone has for these great songs. Interestingly, this is also one of the best engineered of Ben's albums, and as we've done for all these releases, we've considerably spruced up the sound for this new release. And the cover art is, of course, by the great Harvey Schmidt.
