A domesticated Spix's macaw named Blu, the last known male of his species, and his owner Linda are invited to travel to Rio de Janeiro by an Ornithologist named Túlio in an effort to save the species from extinction by introducing Blu to the last known female, Jewel. In Rio de Janeiro the birds are captured by a gang of smugglers with the help of a cockatoo named Nigel, and spend the majority of the film attempting to escape.
