Beat Records is pleased to reissue on CD the OST by Ennio Morricone for Ecce Homo - i sopravvissuti, a science fiction drama directed in 1968 by Bruno Gaburro with a screenplay by Bruno Gaburro and Giacomo Gramegna, photography by Marcello Masciocchi, editing by Renato Cinquini, music by Ennio Morricone, production by Pierluigi Torri, distribution by Roberto Loyola Cin.Ca, and a cast including Irene Papas, Gabriele Tinti, Frank Wolff, Philippe Leroy, and Marco Stefanelli.

The plot:
Having survived a terrifying nuclear war that destroyed the human race, a family of three—Jean, his wife Anna, and their only son, Patrick—lives in an old caravan by the sea, subsisting on fish and obtaining a few essential tools from the nearby abandoned city. One day, two other humans appear: Quentin, an intellectual, and Len, a former soldier. Rather than being happy, however, Jean, rendered impotent by radiation, despises their presence, ostensibly because it has destroyed the peace of his small community, but in reality, because he is deeply jealous of his wife. His hatred toward the two intruders grows when, eavesdropping on their conversation, he hears Quentin declare the need to impregnate Anna so that she can give birth to the new human race. Taking advantage of a trip to the city, Anna and Len fall in love. Upon their return, Jean forces the young man and his companion to leave; in response, Len kills him and also gets rid of Quentin, forcing him to live in solitude. One day, when little Patrick comes to visit him, Quentin learns that Anna and Len have decided to leave. To prevent them, he sets fire to a pickup truck, their only means of transportation. Furious, Len chases him down to kill him, but Quentin is also armed, and it is the young man who dies. In despair, Anna drowns herself. Quentin and Patrick are now the last inhabitants of Earth.

The music:
For this CD (with a duration of 64:18), we used the stereo master tapes from the original sessions, and as a bonus track, we've included a lengthy mono suite assembled by Maestro Morricone himself for a promotional double vinyl release. The maestro composed a fascinating experimental score that draws on his studies and performances with the Gruppo di Improvvisazione Nuova Consonanza, founded by Goffredo Petrassi. Morricone perfectly captured the deceptively quiet atmosphere of a post-nuclear world, where survivors live in solitude in touch with nature. This is enhanced by Edda Dell'Orso's crystalline voice, which here becomes an instrument in the small ensemble alongside flute, harp, percussion, vibraphone, marimba, and viola. This is perfect instrumentation for this setting, given that a symphony orchestra would likely have been too large to create the appropriate sound. Instead, the shifts between avant-garde, ethnic, and psychedelic influences evoke unique emotions in the listener, even off-screen. Without a doubt, this is one of Morricone's best works and one of the maestro's favorites.
