Dragon’s Domain Records presents the premiere release of the original motion picture Score to THE GIRL AND THE GENERAL, featuring music composed and conducted by Ennio Morricone for the 1967 comedy-drama directed by Pasquale Festa Campanile, written by Massimo Franciosa, Luigi Malerba and Campanile, starring Rod Steiger, Virna Lisi and Umberto Orsini.

Released in 1967, THE GIRL AND THE GENERAL, also known as LA RAGAZZA E IL GENERALE, is an Italian anti-war comedy-drama. Rod Steiger stars as an unnamed one-armed Austrian general who carelessly wanders away from his staff to relieve himself during a World War I conflict with Italian forces. Dreaming of the honors and 1000 Lire riches he will receive as a reward, Private Tarasconi (Orsini) captures the enemy officer hoping to deliver him to his superiors. The pair sets off on a cross-country trek but the general proves a wily adversary and comically escapes while chained to a bed frame, with a bell around his neck, as a fatigued Tarasconi soundly sleeps. Finally awakened by a torrential downpour, the hapless soldier encounters a peasant woman named Ada (Lisi), who agrees to help recapture the Austrian and split the reward. The girl soon proves to be just as adept in tripping up Tarasconi with her feminine wiles and absconds with the general, that is until the hapless soldier catches up with them...

Composer Ennio Morricone wonderfully underscores the dramatic moments, alternating between unconventional wordless vocals and expressive string arrangements, emphasizing the emotional dynamics between Orsini's character and Lisi's peasant woman.

Ennio Morricone was born in Rome on November 10, 1928. His musical education began thanks to his father, a trumpeter, who taught him to read music and play several instruments. He wrote his first composition at just six years old, eventually applying his talents to theater and radio before moving into films, where he “ghost-wrote” music to support credited composers. His first on-screen composer credit came with Luciano Salce’s IL FEDERALE in 1961. Morricone scored over 400 films and television programs, covering all genres from not only comedies and westerns, but science fiction to Giallo horror. Despite never learning to speak English, Hollywood called on the composer for several soundtracks including TWO MULES FOR SISTER SARA, DAYS OF HEAVEN, THE MISSION and THE UNTOUCHABLES. Morricone was nominated multiple times for Oscars and Golden Globes. He is the winner of several Golden Globes and finally received an honorary Oscar in 2007 for his magnificent and multifaceted contributions to the art of film music.

Dragon’s Domain Records is excited to present the premiere release of the original tracks for THE GIRL AND THE GENERAL, composed and conducted by the great Ennio Morricone, with the music mastered by James Nelson at Digital Outland, including liner notes written by author David Hirsch.
