Original Swedish Cast Recording
Music by Frederick Loewe, Lyrics by Alan Jay Lerner
What can one say about My Fair Lady that hasn’t already been said? The show opened at the Mark Hellinger Theater on March 15, 1956, moved to the Broadhurst, and then to the Broadway, amassing a run of 2,717 performances, a record back then. And speaking of a record, Columbia, who’d invested heavily in the show, and producer Goddard Lieberson made the cast recording, and it became the first LP to sell over a million copies. It spent fifteen weeks at number one on the Billboard chart and remained on the Billboard 200 chart for an astonishing total of 480 weeks.
When the show was then done all over the world, many cast albums were done, including the hit production from Sweden starring Ulla Sallert and Jarl Kulle. Ms. Sallert would eventually end up on the Broadway stage, starring opposite the one and only Robert Preston in the flop musical, Ben Franklin in Paris. The Swedish production opened in 1959 and ran 766 performances, a record not broken until Phantom of the Opera played there.
The Swedish My Fair Lady was issued on CD in mid-2025, while we were on a hiatus – we had it ready to go, along with ten other titles, but the hiatus was necessary, and naturally another label beat us to the punch, but the punch was thankfully minimal – a CD-R pressing of only 100 copies and bonus tracks from two of Ms. Sallert’s solo albums. We felt it was still worth releasing because the 100 copies sold instantly, and there are people out there who do care whether it’s a properly pressed CD as opposed to a CD-R. We also thought it would be much more fun for our bonus tracks to actually be My Fair Lady related, so we’ve included tracks from other foreign cast recordings of the show, most done by Columbia itself. So, you’ll get to hear tracks from the Mexican, Italian, German, and Hebrew cast albums and I’m here to tell you that they are a ton of fun and it’s great to hear all the different interpretations of the characters. It’s close to eighty minutes of My Fair Lady excellence. So, put on your Svenska and your Mexican, Italian, German, and Hebrew and enjoy one of the greatest theater scores ever written.
