THE PRINCE OF TIDES (CD)
Composed by: James Newton Howard

NEAR MINT - UNSEALED - ONLY ONE AVAILABLE

Streisand initially hired English composer John Barry to write a score for the film, but Barry eventually left due to creative differences. In a March 7, 1996, Cinemusic conference interview, Barry explained his exodus from the film, stating, "I was asked by Barbra Streisand to do The Prince of Tides – I live in New York, she lives in Los Angeles – and I went and met with her, and she showed me some footage, and she said, 'Why aren't you moving to Los Angeles?' and I said, 'Absolutely not.' And she said, 'Well, I like to know what's going on' – Barbra's an extreme case, by the way – and I said, 'Even if I did move to Los Angeles, I have no desire to meet with you once I know what I'm going to do. I can't work with someone over my shoulder, absolutely no way.'" Barry later retitled his theme for The Prince of Tides "Moviola" and it was released on his 1992 movie theme album of the same name.

The final film score was composed by James Newton Howard and released November 12, 1991. It was well received by critics and garnered Howard his first Academy Award nomination for Best Original Score, though it lost to Alan Menken's music for Beauty and the Beast. The soundtrack contains two songs by Streisand, although they did not appear in the film.

A SUBLIME MOTION PICTURE SOUNDTRACK! Along with many great instrumental themes by James Newton Howard there’s more to this than you’d think if you only saw/heard the film. It has two songs that Barbra Streisand did for this OST ONLY, not in the movie at all! One is remake of “For all we know” (not The Carpenter’s song, another song w/that name) and a brand new song written for this movie/story alone, a ballad by Husband & Wife songwriters extraordinaire: Marilyn and Alan Bergman with James N. Howard titled “Places that Belong to You”. With all of the amazing performances Streisand has given us over her career, this song has stood, still does, out to me as one of her most special, for two reasons. One, the lyrics are gorgeous and perfect for the story of love/(*Spoiler Alert*) love lost, two, Barbra’s interpretation especially as the character and being such a gifted vocalist(that word doesn’t seem nearly enough to capture what she is to me). It’s simply perfection and worth buying the C.D./etc for alone, even though there’s plenty wonderfulness here. “Places that Belong to You” is what you feel when someone you’ve loved deeply, dearly but for whatever reasons cannot continue with, it’s about those places in your heart & soul that will always belong to them alone. It’s really a haunting ballad, telling the story of how that love changed [her] forever, expressing the touching sentiments of: “remember that even though we can’t be together, we’re more for having loved one another”, “someday when someone else’s arms are around us, when time has put some distance between us, the years will kindly show how memories come and go, they ebb and flow like the tides, there are quiet places in my heart ever since we’ve parted, gentle, tender, traces of a song, places that belong to you”. Great stuff, huh? I very highly recommend this, still have and play the CD to this day(2017)and will continue...
