THE CARETAKERS (DELUXE EDITION) / THE YOUNG DOCTORS (CD)
Composed by: Elmer Bernstein

THE CARETAKERS
Robert Stack and Joan Crawford are caretakers, warring over the proper care and treatment of a mentally ill patient in this "flawlessly directed (film) building to moments of chilling suspense" (The Hollywood Reporter). When Lorna Melford (Polly Bergen) is committed to an institution for the mentally insane, she becomes the unwitting pawn between a crusading psychiatrist (Stack) who believes in kindness and group therapy, and an old-fashioned head nurse (Crawford) whose idea of care includes straitjackets and padded cells. Caught in the middle, Lorna is subjected to an unending series of therapies and procedure from which "The Caretakers" (1963) will determine her ultimate fate, eventual release or permanent incarceration.

Featuring Oscar-nominated Cinematography and a provocative musical score by Elmer Bernstein, The Caretakers is a "searing, emotionally charged motion picture of unusual quality and striking impact" (Motion Picture Herald).

THE YOUNG DOCTORS
Starring Ben Gazzara, Fredric March, Dick Clark, Ina Balin, Eddie Albert, Phyllis Love and George Segal, The Young Doctors (1961) was directed by Phil Karlson, from a novel by Arthur Hailey. The film’s narrator was none other than Ronald Reagan.

When young Dr. David Coleman (Gazzara) arrives at a large New York hospital to join the pathology staff, he is greeted with hostility by aging chief pathologist Dr. Joseph Pearson (March), who regards Coleman's arrival as a personal criticism of his competence. The drama of life and death, along with personal relationships, hospital politics and ego is played out in compelling fashion. This largely unknown score by Elmer Bernstein will be a revelation for most, from the blistering Main Title to a ravishing Waltz.
