MAME (1974) (BLU-RAY)
Starring:  Joyce Van Patten, Lucille Ball, Bruce Davison, Don Porter, Audrey Christie, Kirby Furlong, Richard O. Fleischer, Doria Cook-Nelson, Bobbi Jordan, Robert Preston, Beatrice Arthur, Jane Connell, George Chiang
Directed By:  Gene Saks

Youre invited to party hearty -- and in fabulous style -- with this lavish 1974 screen version of the beloved Broadway musical. Lucille Ball brings star sparkle to the title role, a high-living grande dame whos outlandishly eccentric and, when suddenly faced with raising an orphaned nephew, fiercely loving. Veterans of the New York stage original join her: Beatrice Arthur as best friend Vera, Jane Connell as prim governessAgnes, choreographer Onna White and director Gene Saks. As Mames husband Beauregard, Robert Preston (The Music Man) sings Loving You, written specially for the film. Jerry Hermans songs, from Its Today to We Need a Little Christmas to If He Walked into My Life, rank among the best show tunes ever. For a grand time, bring home Mame.

the Picture Quality is quite good.

The Musical based on the book of Patrick Dennis in 1955 became already a movie in 1958 as "Auntie Mame" before I came 1966 to Broadway starring Angela Lansbury and "Golden Girl"-Bea Arthur.

In this Version Mame is played by TV Darling Lucille Ball as free-thinking and party-loving Upper-Class Lady and Bea Arthur is re-prising her Broadway-role of actress and Broadway-star Vera.

Usually I'm not a fan of 1970's movie-musicals but this one is quite entertaining with snappy and sharp-tongued dialogues about the conservative and religious New-York Upper-Class.

Fazit: not the best Musical but still very entertaining.

Trivia: director Gene Saks were the real-life husband of Bea Arthur. In am small-role near the end of the movie can be seen a very young Patrick Laborteaux in his movie-debut.
