THREE COINS IN THE FOUNTAIN (1954) (BLU-RAY)
Starring:  Louis Jourdan, Jean Peters, Rossano Brazzi, Dorothy McGuire, Clifton Webb, Maggie McNamara
Directed By:  Jean Negulesco
Composed By:  Victor Young

“Warmth, humor, a rich dose of romance, and almost incredible pictorial appeal.”
– Variety

“The city of Rome looks mighty handsome, and Venice is simply exquisite, especially as seen from the air…quite clearly a film which the locale comes first. However, its fable tumbles nicely within the picture frame.”
– Bosley Crowther, The New York Times

Three Coins in the Fountain (1954) is a classic Twentieth Century Fox melodrama directed by the painterly Jean Negulesco: a CinemaScope™ dream of Italy that also falls squarely into the “three gals looking for love” genre. The gals here are Dorothy McGuire, Jean Peters, and Maggie McNamara, all working women in glamorous 1950s Rome, all pursuing romance by means fair or foul. Gorgeously shot by Milton Krasner, and featuring one of the most famous title songs of the era, an Oscar® winner by Jule Styne and Sammy Cahn, perfectly warbled here by Frank Sinatra.

The old FOX DVD of Three Coins In The Fountain sported a decent transfer but this new Twilight Time blu-ray edition enhances the viewing experience with the more accurate original CINEMASCOPE ratio of 2:55:1 , a sharper image and more vibrant color palette. Fans of this iconic 1950s romance can't go wrong purchasing this new disc. Sound is great too. A 1953 Oscar nominee for Best Picture and winner for Best Cinematography and Song, this gorgeously scenic soap opera may not go very deep as far as brilliant drama is concerned but for what it is, the movie is terrifically entertaining and often quite moving. An expert cast puts the suds in fanciful motion. The "3 American Girls On A Vacation To Rome" plot is an old Hollywood staple and it works beautifully here. Dorothy Maguire, Jean Peters and Maggie McNamara are outstanding and their respective paramours ,Clifton Webb, Rossano Brazzi and Louis Jourdan compliment the ladies perfectly. Brazzi turns up the heat considerably in his love scenes with Peters, much as he did a year later with Katherine Hepburn in a similar but more artful diversion, David Lean's vista laden "Summertime". Jourdan is the epitome of French male pulchritude (even though he plays an Italian prince!). His scenes with McNamara, determined to nab her man, have great off-kilter tension. But the real scene stealer is the one and only Clifton Webb as the aging expatriate novelist. His scenes with Maguire, the assistant who secretly loves him, are deeply moving. When Webb discovers that he has a terminal disease and tries to hide the fact from Maguire by feigning coldness, the movie takes on a gravitas that nearly topples the film's effervescence. Nevertheless, it works.

The movie opens with a now famous pre-title sequence, a travelogue montage of Rome's most glorious sights, a sun dappled collection of scenes from a tourist's ground eye view to bird's eye helicopter shots overhead. A brief sojourn to Venice later in the film adds to the verisimilitude of this gorgeously evocative production. Frank Sinatra expertly warbles the title song amid the lush images before the credits start. I can't think of a more perfect movie to showcase the wonders of the early 50's wide screen era. Anyone who loves romantic movies will fall for this film.
