THE ABBOTT AND COSTELLO SHOW - SEASON 2 (1953 / 3 DISCS) (DVD)
Starring:  Bud Abbott, Gordon Jones, Lou Costello, Sid Fields, Phyllis Coates, Walter Catlett, Max Baer, Veda Ann Borg, Paul Bryar
Directed By:  Jean Yarbrough

Painstakingly restored from original 35mm master elements by the 3-D Film Archive, in collaboration with the Library of Congress, ClassicFlix presents The Abbott and Costello Show – Season 2 with all 26 episodes from the iconic series looking and sounding better than ever in a 3-disc set. In its second and final season, the show evolved from a freewheeling pastiche inspired by vintage burlesque bits to a plot-driven sitcom harkening back to vintage comedy shorts. Like Bud and Lou, Season 2 writers Clyde Bruckman and Jack Townley, veterans of two-reel comedy, had no qualms about recycling gags or plots if they were funny.

Production also moved from Hal Roach Studios to Motion Picture Center Studios, which also had great comedy karma—I Love Lucy moved to the lot in 1953, followed by many other classic sitcoms. But although their neighborhood and neighbors changed, some things did not: Bud and Lou still run into nutty characters, owe back rent, vex Mike the Cop—and deliver surefire laughs.

Dependable second bananas Sid Fields and Gordon Jones are supplemented with a wealth of familiar faces, including Max Baer, Veda Ann Borg, Paul Bryer, Walter Catlett, Phyllis Coates, Paul Fix, Thurston Hall, Ted Hecht, Percy Helton, Gloria Henry, Adele Jergens, Glenn Langan, Mary Beth Hughes, Lucien Littlefield, Jean Porter, Joe Sawyer, and many more.
