In collaboration with BMG, Music Box Records proudly presents three expanded original motion picture soundtracks composed by Philippe Sarde between 1980 and 1986: Hôtel des Amériques (Hotel America), Un mauvais fils (A Bad Son) and Le Lieu du crime (Scene of the Crime).
This new album continues to explore Philippe Sarde’s rich musical career, focusing on three scores written for Claude Sautet and André Téchiné, two of the most emblematic directors the composer worked with.
Hôtel des Amériques, released in 1981, is part of one of the composer's most successful years (Choice of Arms, Clean Slate, Quest for Fire, Ghost Story... ). Finally presented in its complete version, the composer provides a broad romantic score highlighting the lyrical phrasing of the strings of the London Symphony Orchestra conducted by Peter Knight and recorded at Abbey Road Studios with the passionate participation of the English pianist Howard Shelley. For Le Lieu du crime (1986), the lyricism of the score comes from its resolutely intimate chamber music style, showcased by the performance of the strings section of the Orchestre de Paris. A Bad Son (1980) can be considered as one of Claude Sautet's most beautiful films to take the listener towards melancholic jazz music performed by legendary saxophonists Archie Shepp and John Surman associated with the elegiac timbre of Maurice Murphy, principal trumpet player of the London Symphony Orchestra.
Supervised by Philippe Sarde and assembled by Édouard Dubois, the program has been fully expanded and remastered from the scoring session elements. The package includes a 12-page booklet featuring exclusive liner notes by writer Christian Lauliac discussing the films and the scores. The CD release is limited to 500 units.
