“Allen almost seems to be making a modern-dress Elizabethan comedy…he is as acute an author of serious dialogue as anyone now making movies.”
– Roger Ebert, Chicago Sun-Times
“Performances – most notably those of Wiest and Warden – are superb, while Allen’s direction shows admirable economy in establishing and sustaining mood, and in clearly delineating the claustrophobic parameters of his characters’ emotional lives.”
– Time Out London
Writer-director Woody Allen’s September (1987) is a tale of yearning, artsy, upper-crust, neurotic characters coupling and uncoupling during a fall gathering at a Vermont estate. A sterling cast – Denholm Elliott, Dianne Wiest, Mia Farrow, Elaine Stritch, Sam Waterston, Jack Warden – delivers the emotional ambience, while cinematographer Carlo Di Palma provides the stunning visual atmosphere.
