Quartet Records, in collaboration with Cinevox Records, presents a completely new edition of Ennio Morricone’s masterful score for Elio Petri’s masterpiece from 1969, INDAGINE SU UN CITTADINO AL DI SOPRA DI OGNI SOSPETTO. Academy-Award winner of Best Foreign Film in 1970, the film stars Gian Maria Volonté and Florinda Bolkan in a quintessential example of social and protest cinema.

The intricate plot concerns a high-ranking police inspector who kills his mistress and deliberately plants clues indicating his responsibility for the crime in a sardonic test to prove that he is above suspicion.

The iconic score written by Ennio Morricone is the pivot point of a grotesque substratum of black comedy that blurs over a subversive and iconoclastic drama. Starting from the instrumentation used—mandolin, classical guitar, out-of-tune piano, bassoons, synthesizer and mouth harp—the interpretation of the piece, careless, somewhat dirty and imprecise, brilliantly evokes the murkiness insinuated by the images.

The album of INDAGINE has been released many times, both on vinyl and CD—although until the first simultaneous American and French LP releases in 1981, only a 45-rpm single with the two main themes had existed. But it was always in mono until, in 2007, Cinevox released an expanded edition with the original album in mono and some film versions and alternates remixed in stereo from an incomplete multi-track. Now, thanks to the discovery of the original elements, we are able to present the original album and all the film versions and alternates in full stereo for the first time. Since there was room, we have included the remastered mono album, as it featured unique mixes and takes.

This 2025 edition was mixed, restored and mastered by Chris Malone and produced by Claudio Fuiano and Dániel Winkler. The accompanying booklet includes an essay by Miguel Ángel Ordóñez discussing the film and score.
