“Ritchie employs a nostalgic period setting, extravagant production design long on artifice, breathtaking Western landscapes (captured luxuriantly in good old Panavision by the lens of cinematographer Fred Murphy), lush orchestrations (from Broadway legend Jonathan Tunick), and unabashedly broad comedic and romantic performances, all of which recalls those glossy, melodic, captivating musicals of the Fifties and Sixties.”
—Robert Faires, The Austin Chronicle
“A modest charmer…it’s also sweet and optimistic—a welcome antidote to gloom.”
—Edward Guthmann, SFGate
“A tribute to the transformative power of theater…overflows with affection and good intention.”
—The New York Times
Director Michael Ritchie’s movie version of the perennial off-Broadway smash, The Fantasticks (1995/2000), was made five years before it was actually released, with an assist from Francis Ford Coppola. A charm-drenched period-piece musical, it tells the story of a pair of potential young lovers (Jean Louisa Kelly, Joey McIntyre) whose romance is assisted/derailed by the machinations of their fathers, played to a fare-thee-well by Joel Grey and Brad Sullivan. Featuring a memorable, award-winning score by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt, highlighted by the deathless “Try to Remember.”
