YANKEE SAILS ACROSS EUROPE
Composed and Conducted by Elmer Bernstein
GRIZZLY
Composed and Conducted by Jerome Moross
INTRADA is proud to announce the premiere release of two scores by two legends of Hollywood composed for National Geographic specials in 1967.
The first featured score is Elmer Bernstein's YANKEE SAILS ACROSS EUROPE, chronicling the the voyage of veteran sailors Irving and Electa Johnson. Aboard their 50-foot ketch Yankee, they sail the waterways of France, Germany, the Netherlands, Denmark, and Belgium. The score is Bernstein at his most melodic, even incorporating some of the large-scale sweep of features he scored around the same time, such as HAWAII and RETURN OF THE SEVEN.
The second featured score is Jerome Moross' GRIZZLY. This special profiles twin ecologists Frank and John Craighead and their mission to learn more about the habits and lifestyles of the North American Grizzly bear. The music, Moross' only score for National Geographic, has the feel of his landmark score THE BIG COUNTRY, yet still manages to capture the vivacity and inquisitiveness of the twin naturalists and their subjects.
Naturally, this album would not be complete without featuring Bernstein's famous theme. Heard here in its original form, the theme was conceived clearly as a fanfare for brass and percussion, delivering spare, distinctive harmonies and energetic rhythms.

Exciting original soundtracks from pair of National Geographic TV Specials that aired on CBS in 1967. CD features two legendary Americana composers at the peak of their powers. YANKEE SAILS ACROSS EUROPE by Elmer Bernstein (31:10): Documentary about famed sailing vessel making variety of journeys through European waters. Bernstein creates beautiful waltz melody for European locale, surrounds it with energetic sailing motif for ship. Dynamic French horn motif as Yankee navigates the seas, stirring fanfare as she passes Cathedral of Notre Dame are two of many highlights. GRIZZLY! by Jerome Moross (30:36): Twin ecologists study, document habitats of wild North American bears. Moross creates rhythmic "western" theme as anchor, embellishes with various treatments (adventure, playful, gentle harmonica, etc.) Sweeping horn line, woodwind flurries during "Fly Fishing" sequence one of many highlights. Both scores presented complete, in mono from original session elements. Each includes all "bumpers" leading to, from commercials. Also featured is full-length (and rarely heard) extended version of Bernstein's powerful National Geographic main theme - itself a TV scoring landmark. Elmer Bernstein & Jerome Moross conduct.
