Back in the late 1990s, Varese Sarabande released a studio cast recording of The Night of the Hunter, a new musical based on the classic novel by Davis Grubb, and the legendary movie version starring Robert Mitchum, Shelly Winters, and Lillian Gish, directed by Charles Laughton. With music by the underappreciated but brilliant Claibe Richardson (The Grass Harp), and book and lyrics by Stephen Cole, the musical captures the story of an evil and terrifying preacher marrying the widow of a thief whose money he entrusted to his two young children with stunning musical brilliance and lyrics that capture the terror, the horror, and the innocence of the two children. The much-praised recording led to several first-class productions around the country. It’s powerful, it’s tuneful, and on the studio cast recording it’s performed by a stellar all-star cast, including Ron Raines, Sally Mayes, Marcia Lewis, Jonathan Freeman, George Lee Andrews, and the legendary Tony award-winning Dorothy Loudon.
The recording features a thirty-piece orchestra conducted by Todd Ellison, with orchestrations by Donald Johnson. It was produced by Grammy-nominated Bruce Kimmel. The original release has been out of print for over two decades. For this reissue, the album has been newly remastered by James Nelson, and features some demo recordings of a few songs, new notes by Stephen Cole. The classic cover art was by the amazing John Alvin, the artist behind such movie posters as E.T., 10, Blade Runner, Gremlins, The Color Purple, The Lion King and many others.
