Bertrand Tavernier - Intelligent and versatile writer/director who has impressed international audiences with his work in various genres. Like so many French filmmakers, he started as a critic (contributing to "Cahiers du Cinéma") and wrote extensively on American films. He worked as a publicist and then an assistant director. His first feature film, The Clockmaker (1973), based on a Georges Simenon novel, won international prizes and established him as a major talent. It also marked the beginning of a long and fruitful collaboration with actor Philippe Noiret, who has gotten some of his best opportunities in Tavernier's beautifully crafted films. He followed this world-class debut with The Judge and the Assassin, Let Joy Reign Supreme (both 1975), Spoiled Children (1977), Deathwatch (1980), a sci-fi commentary on media voyeurism starring American actors Harvey Keitel and Harry Dean Stanton, A Week's Vacation (1980), and Coup de Torchon (1981, also known as Clean Slate a superb adaptation of a Jim Thompson novel that Tavernier moved from America to a French colony in Africa.
In 1983 he made a documentary, Mississippi Blues about the American South, then earned international acclaim for his sensitive and exquisite A Sunday in the Country (1984). Two years later he adapted the true story of a French fan's attempt to watch over doomed jazz pianist Bud Powell into the moody and expressive Round Midnight (1986), in which real-life tenor sax great Dexter Gordon played the musician.
Tavernier then made the medieval saga Beatrice (1988) with a surprising score by jazz bassist Ron Carter. His recent triumphs include the moving war drama Life and Nothing But (1989) and Daddy Nostalgie (1990), which marked actor Dirk Bogarde's return to the screen after a long absence. Other credits include L627 (1992), D'Artagnan's Daughter (1994), and L'Appat (1995). Father of actor Nils Tavernier.
